World Demand for Steel:

Technology
Nearly everybody today uses steel or steel products. It is used in construction, cars, technology and many other things. As new technologies are developed, we improve our standard of living and find more and more uses for steel and steel products. Every year countries around the world need more steel.12

Higher Standard of Living
Wealthier countries, like North America and Europe use much more steel than poorer countries like Africa. Wealthy countries have a lot more money to spend. Their industries are constantly growing and constructing new buildings, their transportation systems are always being expanded and updated, and they are discovering and using new technology every day. People living in developed countries have a much higher standard of living than those in less developed countries. Many people can afford new cars, large homes and products that are simply bought for pleasure like boats and computer games.13

World population
Technology is not the only thing that affects the world demand for steel. Maybe you have a baby brother or sister or maybe you know someone who does. As more and more children are brought into the world, our planet's population grows. These children will soon grow to be adults and will need computers, cars and homes of their own. As world and country populations grow so does the demand for steel.
