Artefacts - Iron

Second only to wood, iron was an important material used in the construction of the P.S. Lady Sherbrooke. Two basic forms of iron, cast and wrought, were used for the various parts of the vessel. In general the purpose of an iron object was to connect or support wooden structural elements. Evidence of the speed of decay to an iron artefact when it is removed from the water can be seen in comparing the first two images. Note the image of the anchor originally used on the Lady Sherbrooke which has been recycled, and continues to be used today.
