Artefacts - Barrels
A variety of staves (the pieces that make up the sides), lids, and metal straps were recovered from the site of the P.S. Lady Sherbrooke. In general the barrels were small, often in the range of less than 10 liters. Evidence of paint residue was found on some pieces pointing to the fact that paint or similar products were stored for use on the vessel. Larger barrels would have been used for transporting liquid cargo such as beer. The images selected here show the pieces that make up a barrel and one barrel that was partially reassembled to give an idea of the scale. |
