Preparing the Site

Preparing the Site At the beginning of each excavation season the team was required to prepare the site of the dive. Several buoys were attached to the bow and the stern of the wreck. This is essential to position the research boat, the John Molson II, parallel to the wreck. Once the buoys are positioned a metal grid was lowered over the actual site. This grid formed a series of squares, 2 meters by 2 meters, that served as a reference point during the excavation. Every square was numbered according to an abscissa and an ordinate. This ensured that every artefact, once labelled as to the point of discovery, can be relocated in any later analysis.

Five additional reference points on the shore helped to triangulate the positioning of the artefacts. A vertical marker was used as a benchmark or altitude marker.
