Eva Bradshaw (1871-1938) was one of the leading London painters in the period between the wars. She studied at the turn of the century in New York City with the famous American teacher, William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), and later returned home to a successful career as a portrait and still life painter. Much of Bradshaw's work was a modern interpretation of a local artistic tradition of floral and still life painting established by the Griffiths Brothers: James (1814-1896) and John (1826-1898). Eva Bradshaw lived all her life in London except for occasional trips to Boston, New York and Philadelphia to study art. Although she was trained as a nurse, she devoted all her time to painting and teaching, and had a great influence on all Londoners who painted, from before the First World War until her death in 1938.
