Garrison Lands, detail from the 1872 Bird's Eye
The military placed a dam on Carling's Creek, creating a large pond at the north end of what became the fair grounds. An octagonal exhibit hall known as the Crystal Palace can be seen to the left of "Great Market" Street (now Central Avenue). It was dismantled and the building materials sold after the Fair was moved east. The section of the reserve to the right of Great Market Street, containing the barracks buildings, is now Victoria Park.
