Near...., Ontario (c. 1890), oil on canvas, 23.9 x 40.6 cm., General Purchase Fund, 1994 John Powell Hunt (1842-1932) was born in St. Mary's, Ontario and died in London, Ontario. He came to this city in 1875 to study with William Lees Judson and met Paul Peel, another young student. Later he studied in Toronto under John Colin Forbes. Most of his career was spent in London where he taught art classes and occasionally worked as a copyist. Hunt painted in oil employing genre, landscape and portrait subjects in the academic style of Judson, his mentor.
