Carling Brewery
Carling brewery, c. 1885
West side of Talbot, between Piccadilly and Ann Streets

This was one of the largest breweries in Canada when it was built in 1875. The original brewery had been founded by Thomas Carling in 1840 on Waterloo Street near a creek, soon to be known as Carling's Creek, which still empties into the Thames, south of Oxford Street. The new brewery was built over a large natural spring which supplied it with pure water. The Carling Brewing and Malting Company was formed in 1882 and by 1890 the plant was producing 32,000 barrels of ale, porter and lager a year and employing about 100 men.
