musket, c. 1840
Muzzle-loading, smooth-bore, percussion cap musket, c. 1840

Instead of sparking a flint, the trigger of this gun brought a hollow-nosed percussion hammer down onto a cap of fulminate of mercury, secured to a point on the barrel and connected to the powder chamber by a channel. The exploding cap sent a flash down the channel igniting the main charge and firing the weapon.
