Robert Heard Whale

Robert Heard Whale (1857-1906) was born in Burford, Ontario and died at Capetown, South Africa. He received his early art training from his father, Robert Reginald Whale, and studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London, England. Later, he attended the Academie Julien in Paris, France under Benjamin Constant and Adolphe Bouguereau. Whale served as drawing master at various secondary and normal schools in Ontario before leaving for Capetown in 1898 where he soon became president of the local art school. Like his father, he worked in an academic style principally in oil with genre and landscape subjects.
