Ezekiel Sexton

Self Portrait with Wife and Daughter, (c.1852) Self Portrait with Wife and Daughter (c. 1852), oil on canvas, 98.1 cm. diameter, gift of Ed McKone, Esq., London, 1964
Ezekeil Sexton (c.1820-1859) is a mysterious artistic figure in our region. It is probable that he was born in upper New York state around Schenectady and died somewhere in the gold fields of California. His family possibly emigrated to the Ancaster area in 1830 and he may have received his art training from a family member, Samuel Hayden Sexton, a painter in Schenectady. There are great similarities in their styles. This young painter was an itinerant who sought portrait commissions throughout the southwestern peninsula. He also taught art during his travels frequently staying at the homes of his local patrons. Sexton's only identified work is in oil and it follows the tradition of academic portraiture of the period.
