Government
House is the day-to-day workplace of the Lieutenant Governor of
Nova Scotia. If you've ever seen the place, it would likely shock
the pants off you to discover that this central mansion (located
just past the corner of Spring Garden Road and Barrington Street)
was once in Halifax's suburbs, but it's quite true!
The man responsible for building the house was Governor Sir John
Wentworth, who, while surely a lovely man and a former Governor
of the state of New Hampshire, was surprisingly never even Lieutenant
Governor of our province! He came to Halifax during the American
Revolutionary War with a group of New Englanders loyal to the British
crown, who were, by all accounts, utterly scandalized by the lack
of British influence in America. Together, the Wentworths and their
friends brought a new political and social system to Nova Scotia.
Although general admission to Government House is not permitted
(how would you like somebody walking into your bedroom every
time you sat down to work?), official events are scheduled daily
and thousands of people attend functions in the mansion every year!
If you're really up for seeing this fantastic piece of history in
real life, be sure to contact the office
to find out about the next guided tour of the mansion.
