Lend a Hand Club
by Joan Morrison

It was on a fall evening in 1948 when a small group of young housewives and mothers met at the home of Ingrid Monk (Hoas). She lived with her husband in the little house surrounded by the creek across from the old brick house of Sigalets (later Morrisons). These ladies met to organize a club to help any families or projects in the community. The name "Lend-a-Hand" was appropriately chosen and it became one of the more popular clubs in Lumby.

Members were invited to join and were voted in. No one over the age of thirty five was allowed in. Membership was kept around twelve so the group could be comfortably accommodated in any home where they met.

Over the years much needy assistance was given to individuals and projects, such as burned out families etc. One of the largest undertakings was to canvas Lumby residents for money to build a swimming pool. After it was built members took shifts sitting at the pool.

The club became famous for the 'Fun Floats' in the Lumby Days July 1 parade. Husbands and families would look the other way as wives danced and performen in hilarious costumes on the float in the parade - much to the enjoyment of the community!

What fun we had! These memories of good times working with friends for worthwhile causes will remain with us forever and we also hope some of the work accomplished will be remembered.
