Martin's Locker Plant and Butcher Shop

In 1947 Joe and Josie Martin built a store on the corner of Shuswap Ave. and Vernon St. At first the shop carried mainly meat then they went into groceries and produce. In 1948-49 they opened up the Meat Locker Plant. They had 409 lockers enough to hold a whole packaged beef.

The Martins would cut, wrap and freeze the butchered meat. This was a very successful business as there were no deep freezes in every home like there is today.

The first butcher employed by the Martins was Wally Lesmeister, then George Roedes, Art Lake and Frank Pawlick. They closed the store when they sold to the Sheardowns in 1958.
