Overview of Lumby

The first water system was started in 1958 and in 1970-71 the High ZoneReservoir and pump house was constructed and put in use. In 1979 the second Low Zone reservoir was constructed and in 1980 the Artesian Well and pump house on Mabel Lake Road was connected to the water system. In 1994 a third water reservoir was constructed above the first and second.

The sewer system was put in 1962 with a two cell treatment plant. In 1967 more properties were serviced. 1974 saw expansion of the treatment plant to three cells and upgraded to service 2000 people.

The drainage system was constructed in many sections over the years. 1957 Shuswap Ave. to Maple St. to bridge, in 1959 Glencaird St. to Maple St. In 1960 Highways put in Vernon St. drainage, which was upgraded in 1982. Then in the early 1970's Vernon St. (Highway 6) from Shuswap Ave. to Norris Ave. to the creek. In 1979 the lane at Charles Bloom High School from Miller St. to Glencaird St.,then Miller St. to Norris Ave. to the creek. The drainage has covered most of the flat area of Lumby.

Natural Gas came to Lumby in 1969.

Street lighting was put in the early 1940's with upgrading being done over the last fifty years.

The Industrial Park east of the Village was purchased from the Inglis family in 1982 and developed by the Village with paved road, water, drainage and natural gas.

The Public Works for the Village was carried out by Harvey Howard with Jack Niihara helping out. After incorporation the first foreman, Reginald Blaney was hired in 1958, retired in 1977. For the next 5 years Wallace Howkins acted as foreman until David Belshaw was hired in 1982. David at present is Superintendent of Public Works. Wallace (Wally) Howkins worked from 1960 to retirement in 1986. The present crew consists of Albert Kral hired in 1974 and Garth Kuroka hired in 1976.
