  • Arrived in Lumby, 1908.
  • Opened a Barber Shop, 1910.
  • Retired in 1950, in Lumby.

Mr. Ernest Alger arrived in Lumby in 1908 from Vancouver, where he was discharged from the Marines. In 1910 he opened a Barber Shop. On July 5th 1913, Ernest married Hazel Hanson in Vernon, then took his bride to Richland flats, near Cherryville. Algers then moved from Richland Flats to Trinity Valley. There, he pre-empted a piece of land which was then to be farmed. Mabel, Ernest's daughter, was born in Trinity Valley, on August 12, 1914.

On March 2, 1916, the Alger family moved to North Dakota, U.S.A. The Algers stayed there for roughly 3 years, then moved onto Minnesota and stayed there for 3 years as well. After that 3 year period, the Alger family made their way back to Lumby on October 1, 1922. Ernest started his Barber Shop up again in the old pool hall. Alphonse Quesnel had the other part of the building for the Post Office (now Sheardown's parking lot). Mr. and Mrs. Alger had 2 more children after their arrival to Lumby from the U.S.A., Hazel and Rex. In 1950 the Algers retired to a beautiful house on Maple St., looking out onto the Lumby Park.
