Pierre Bessette

BIRTH:  June 27th, 1845
DEATH:  Nov.16th, 1895 (White Valley)

  • Found ledge of gold and silver ore 5' thick in Cherry Creek.
  • Built the White Valley Sawmill with Charles Levasseur.
  • His house served as first post office in White Valley.
  • Donated land for a Catholic Church built by Napoleon.


Pierre was known to have came to the White Valley area around 1875. His first recorded preemption was filed on March 6th, 1877 for 320 acres in the upper Coldstream Valley.

In the latter part of the 1870's Pierre was wed to the widow of Thomas Christien, Eunice Virginia Martin, an orphan raised in a convent. The couple had 8 children, Eugene, Malvina, Mery Theodora, Albert, Charles, Herbert, Clarence and Blandine.

In 1888 Pierre and Charles Levasseur built the White Valley Sawmill, Charles sold out to his partner 2 years later. The mill was water powered and was situated about where the Lumby Medical Clinic is today. Pierre and his wife Eunice were well known for their generousity and Christian charity to all. He and his wife also died young, Pierre at 50 and Eunice, 40, in a time span of about 5 months.

Pierre passed away on Nov.16th, 1895 in White Valley.
