Rod was born at North Grant, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia on November 24th, 1884. In 1907, he went to Boston, Mass., and took his apprenticeship as a blacksmith. He went to Vancouver in 1910 and in 1915 enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers to be stationed at St. Johns, Quebec. After his discharge, he returned to British Columbia, settling in Kelowna for two years.

He then came to Lumby and purchased the blacksmith shop of Eli Andre. The building no longer exists, but was located on Shuswap Avenue across from the Lumby Flour and Feed. Rod married Bettie after she recuperated from her motor accident. They were married in Vancouver, in 1929. Because of her accident, Bettie was unable to have children. Instead, they adopted foster children, Fred and Joe.

Rod retired in the late 1950's. He was also a member of the Sacred Heart church and belonged to the Knights of Columbus in Vernon. He was also well known for his participation in community projects. Rod passed away in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital on August 19th, 1971.
