James Grant was born in Kent, England in 1877. He arrived to Canada in 1902, working across prairies homesteading before coming to British Columbia in 1909. He settled in Trinity Valley where cleared land to raise Holstein cows.

James and his wife Beatrix had a family of three children. There was Thomas, James, and an unnamed daughter.
