John was born on March 25, 1880, in Berlin, Ontario. At the turn of the century, he ventured west and secured work at the Coldstream Ranch. He soon abandoned his current occupation to go to Lumby and work as a logger. In Armstrong, John met Annie Jane Smith. Jack and Annie were married on April 10, 1906.

The couple purchased a homestead in the Salmon River Valley where they farmed for a time. John was the Game Warden in that Valley. While on the farm, they had twelve children; John, Jennie, Annie, Nora, Frank, Joe, Dorothy, Charlotte, and Martin. Three other children passed away at very young ages.

The O'Niels moved to Lumby in 1929, purchasing the Brewer property on Mill Road. They had their sixtieth anniversary in 1966. The following year, on March 14, John passed away. Annie O'Niel was one of the pioneers that was honored in 1971 where she received a Centenniel Medallion. She passed away on June 14, 1971, at the age of eighty-five.
