Lumby Flying Frenchmen-1920 to 1929
by Joe & Josie Martin

Later on, about 1920, Lumby was in a league with Vernon, Armstrong and Enderby. The play-offs were usually around New Years. I remember one New Years Day when the first play-off game was to be in Lumby. Vernon came out in full force, supplying the Vernon City Band. Lumby built a grandstand for the band. The band put on a really good performance until they found out the Vernon team was down by four goals. they put their instruments in their cases and played no more. That can never be forgotten. There was really bad feelings between Lumby and Vernon teams. Another time Lumby was playing off Vernon and had agreed on a referee from Armstrong, Fred Murray. When Lumby was out on the ice warming up before the game, a man from Kamloops, Fred Irving, came out on the ice to referee. Our captain, Louis Norris, Knew this fellow and called our team off the ice. In the dressing room referees were discussed. Lumby decided to play with the manager of the Vernon team, John Langstaff, as referee. Vernon refused; so Lumby lost that game by default. Most of the fans got their money refunded.
