Lumby Flying Frenchmen-1929 to 1940
by Joe & Josie Martin

By 1929, the Lumby Hockey Team became the Flying Frenchmen because at this time they were practically all French or of French descent. This was intermediate hockey. In 1930-1931 they won the Coy Cup, emblematic of Intermediate Hockey in British Columbia. They this in Princeton. The final score was 1-0. In that play, the puck flew up over the lights and while the goalie was looking up for it , the puck dropped down into the net. The lights were not very high up, needless to say.

Lumby's second hockey team       After winning the Coy Cup that year, they were given the chance to go to Trail and play the Senior Trail Smoke Eaters. That was the only time an intermediate team had been given a chance to play a senior team. On the Frenchmen team were Jim Inglis as manager, Cleophas Bessette, Joe Martin, Albert Castangnier, Charlie Norris, (goal), John Genier, Nick Quesnel, Art Bessette, Chick Christian, Louis Norris and Fred Miller as trainer.
