Lumby Flying Frenchmen-1940 to Now
by Joe & Josie Martin

The Flying Frenchmen then joined the Okanagan Intermediate League in the early 40's, playing Kelowna, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Armstrong and Enderby. In 1947-48, they won the league championship, the game being played in Vernon. When time came to present the cup with the photographer Doug Kermode present to take the pictures, the cup could not be found, and Lumby was never presented with the trophy. Adding insult to injury, the arena commission turned off the lights when the camera man was ready to take pictures; consequently, no pictures either. They played intermediate hockey until about 1955, then the weatherman played havoc with ice problems.

In 1961 they left the intermediate hockey league and joined the North Okanagan League, playing all their games in Vernon in the Vernon Arena. The league consisted of Head of the Lake, Grandview Flats, Armstrong, Grinrod and The Lumby Flying Frenchmen. The Frenchmen were champions of this league in 61-62, 62-62, 64-65 and 66-67. In 1970 Lumby decided, along with Grinrod, Revelstoke, Salmon Arm, to form a better league and it was named Monashee Hockey League. Golden later entered this league. This lasted several years until distance, weather and distention made Lumby withdraw.

The Flying Frenchmen are once again playing hockey and are doing almost as well as the original Frenchmen did.
