Lumby Flying Frenchmen-Pre 1920
by Joe & Josie Martin

Lumby has always been noted for its sports minded people whether it was football or soccer, hockey or softball. Back before 1900, the first skating rink was built where Rod Chrisholm's blacksmith shop was located on Shuswap Avenue across from the Farmers Supply. It was always a challenge with the snow, having to clear the sheet of ice with horses and a snow scoop. The rink was changed to nine different sites with natural ice before our present arena was built. With natural ice we had to depend on the weather.

In 1910 Lumby formed a hockey team consisting of seven or eight players - Armand Quesnel, Dick Morand, Charlie Christien, Jimmie McAllister, Louis Gooding, William Murphy, Dave Richards and Dave Hardie. In 1913 there was a soccer team with A. Bessette, Charlie wheeler, J. Bibbs, C. Barber, Pete Catt, C. Bessette, Gene Bessette, Johnnie Bessette, Jim Wheeler, T. Edwards, J. Poeroy and Sam Derry. In 1912 the skating rink was located on Charlie Christiens property on Shuswap Avenue. Dave Hardy, who used to play for Lumby was asked by Lester Patrick, who played in Nelson, to go to play in Madison Square Gardens for New York. Dave didn't wish to go.
