Melfort Hotel

Melfort Hotel

Melfort Hotel; 33K

This 20,000 dollar establishment officially opened its doors to the public as a licensed hotel on July 1, 1904. There were free drinks for everyone in the bar room and this was greatly enjoyed by all because Prince Albert was the only place the pioneers could go to get a good drink.

Mr. Hammond arrived from Ottawa, Ontario, in the late summer of 1903. He purchased three lots on the corner of Main Street and Sask. Avenue to build this hotel. The frame of the building was finished before the severe winter weather began. That following New Year, the first ball was held in the unfinished hotel. In the spring of 1904, construction continued.

When the hotel was completed, it consisted of:

1st floor: dining room, reading and bar rooms, kitchen and hall.
2nd floor: 2 parlors, 10 bedrooms and a hall.
3rd floor: 14 bedrooms and a hall.

The hall was nine feet wide plus the length of the hotel long.

In September 1906, Hammond sold the hotel to Mr. P.J. Flanagan of Prince Albert for approximately 22,500 dollars.
