Drawing from personal documentation and experience, this exhibition by Montreal artist Stephen Shortt is concerned with the political situation in Northern Ireland, Shortt's country of origin. Ranging from the purely objective to the intimate, diverging viewpoints are presented including that of a Belfast housewife. The exhibition features fourteen photomontages, four of which are large scale, a large drawing of Ireland, and a large scale orange banner. A booklet containing interviews with people from both sides of the community accompanies the exhibition, leaving the public to draw their own conclusions about England's oldest colony and most intractable problem. Part of a national tour, "... On Britain's Doorstep" will be presented at Artcite, Windsor; Plug-In, Winnipeg; Off Centre Centre, Calgary and 101 Ottawa, Ottawa.

Stephen Shortt received a B.A. in Fine Art from the Chelsea School of Art in London, England in 1974. From 1977 to 1981, he was director of publications at Vehicule Art Montreal, and from 1977 to 1984 was co-publisher of two cultural magazines, "Virus Montreal" and "Virus International". Since 1974, Shortt has participated in solo and group exhibitions in London, England; Toronto; Kingston; Montreal; and Bologna, Italy.
