MEDIA RELEASE Images drawn from his immediate experiences and environment inform the work of emerging Toronto painter Christopher Combs. For his solo exhibition at Mercer Union, Mixed Views, the artist will include six large interlocking multi-paneled canvases with collage elements. Drawing on the concerns and insights of artists such as Van Eyck, Courbet, Manet, Constable and Le Corbusier, Combs explores the expression of contemporary imagery in light of previous artistic traditions. This process forms part of the artist's investigation into uncovering more evocative and enriching methods of approaching contemporary experience. Combs has participated in exhibitions in Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Banff since 1983. A graduate of York University, he completed his MFA in 1987, and is currently enrolled in the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York City. His exhibition in Mercer Union's East Gallery opens Thursday April 13, 8:00 pm and continues through Saturday May 13.
