MEDIA RELEASE Diane Gagné combines terms we take for granted--"sister," for example-- with everyday names for body parts to coin new terms of address such as "sisterhead." For this installation, Gagne has constructed a curved wall ten by sixty feet in which the image of one of these idiomatic words occupies fifty running feet. By thus incorporating a mutated private jargon into a grand, formal frame she parodies identification and sexuality and the way these are determined by language. Diane Gagné has exhibited in group exhibitions at Cold City Gallery, YYZ, Andrew Davies Gallery, A Space, White Water Gallery, North Bay, and the IDA Gallery, York University. Her solo exhibitions include Roundup 88 and 89, The Creative Outlet, and Calumet and Founders Galleries at York University.
