My dear Elsie,

"We were very much interested in your letter announcing Elsie's engagement to Mr. Reford. I do not think I know him by sight, but from all we hear of him we think he will prove to be a good son in law to you and a kind and good husband to Elsie. It is fortunate that in marrying Mr. Reford Elsie will not be separated from you. I am sure that will be a great comfort to you and Robert and should go a long way towards reconciling you to the marriage, which so far as I am able to judge is a most suitable one in every way."

Lord Mount Stephen to Elsie Meighen, July 21st, 1893
