"Grand Metis, the French Canadian hamlet clustered round the demesne of Estevan Lodge where Lily cultivation is being attempted, lies between latitude 48.51 N and longitude 67.32 W on the banks of the St. Lawrence river. As the crow flies it is approximately 175 miles distant from the Gaspe where the St. Lawrence ceases to be a river and becomes a gulf. At Grand Metis its width is about 40 miles with a rise and fall of its tidal salt waters of from 16 to 20 feet. The proximity to so considerable a body of salt water, affording constant life-giving moisture, is one of the important factors which contribute towards the well-being of all our growing things."
