"The Metis river, which empties into the Gulf of the St. Lawrence at this place, takes its rise in a large inland lake bearing its name, and is about 40 miles in length. 2 1/2 miles from the mouth, there is a precipice about 180 feet in height, over which the water falls, and between this impassable barrier, and the mouth of the river, lie the salmon pools. Nearly the whole of this stretch of water may be fished, but the salmon pools are indicated upon the map of this portion of the river which is appended hereto." Description of the Salmon Fishing Estate and Farm at Grand Metis, belonging to the Right Honorable Lord Mount Stephen, 1894 |
