This specimen was found in Girgenti, Sicily, near a region called Agrigento where many excellent crystals of sulphur have been found. Sicily is the largest producer of sulphur in the world. Sulphur is formed when escaping volcanic gases deposit it on the rim of a volcanic crater. Sulphur may also be formed when certain bacteria affect sulfide minerals, leaving behind native sulphur as a by-product.
