Rock Bay area was logged by the Hastings Company and was one of the earliest of the large railway operations that flourished in the early part of the 20th century. The Rock Bay camp was the focal point for extensive logging activity, and it became a centre for those living in isolated spots in the surrounding coastal area, with a hotel, store and most importantly, a much needed hospital established by the Columbia Coast Mission. By 1915, it also had a telegraph line, enhancing communications, which until then were limited to water traffic.
