Fort Frances was originally an important strategic location from the time of the Fur Trade.  Initially, the Northwest Company Fur Trade Post which was situated along the Rainy River near Rainy Lake was called Fort St. Pierre.  This fur Trade post was established in 1731.  The Northwest Company Fur Trade post was named Lac la Pluie in 1787.  In 1820, the Hudson's Bay Company absorbed the Northwest Company into its monopoly.  The fur trade post officially changed it name to Fort Frances in 1830.  Fort Frances is geographically situated halfway between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg ( 335 km).  Fort Frances resides within the Northwest Angle Treaty of 1873 - Treaty No. 3.
