This delightful sign welcomed a wide variety of patrons to the popular and notorious Smiling Buddha on Hastings. Over the years many of Vancouver's well known bands got their start playing the Buddha. In the early 1990's the club closed. Not long after the sign was removed and vanished from view. It later turned up on stage with the band 54-40, who had a special case built to transport the sign between performances. The band has also released an album named for the club.
