City Lights: Vancouver's Neon Heritage

Toys
Photographed by Shani Whitbread

Toys is made from a yellow/gold colored tube. Look closely at the tube and you might notice that this color is not as intense as the other yellows in this exhibit.

Yellows can be achieved using a colored tube, coated inside with a phosphor, and filled with argon. You can see green at the bends where the phosphor is the thinnest and the colored glass is exposed.

Making Other Neon Colours

Tangerines and pinks are created by using a phosphor coated tube filled with neon.

Different shades of blue are created by using various phosphor coatings and Argon.

White is created with the combination of Argon and phosphor coated tubes.

Red is simply Neon in a clear tube.
