HFC (Household Finance Corporation) got its start in the back room of a Minneapolis jewelery store in 1878. By 1907 the idea of personal loans had caught on and there were 63 HFC offices in the U.S. The company made the move to Canada when it bought the Central Finance Corporation of Toronto in 1933. By the 1960's there were 20 HFC offices in the lower mainland.
