City Lights: Vancouver's Neon Heritage

Ovaltine

Ovaltine

Ovaltine Cafe, 251 East Hastings
Made by Wallace Neon, 1942
Photographed by Troy Whitbread

The Ovaltine Cafe opened in 1942, succeeding the Blue Eagle and Eatmoor cafes which occupied the space after Burlington Tailors closed up shop in 1940. Inside, the cafe has survived intact with its popular coffee counter, booths, mirrors and varnished woodwork. The Ovaltine is unique in Vancouver. No other coffee shop has retained its complete signage and interior.
