THE LAST SUPPER
This rich and complex
composition is a testament to Guido Nincheri's artistic talent. The scene
is crowded with characters, as the Apostles gather around Christ, and
yet Nincheri skilfully draws the viewer into the composition, using sight
lines created by the mosaic floor. The horizontal line of the table brings
the viewer's gaze to rest on the characters, some of whom, like Judas,
gaze directly back.
Nincheri's love of detail
is evident in this work. He suggests Judas's coming betrayal of Christ by including
in the composition the door through which Iscariot will slip away. The Last
Supper features the skilful rendition of the texture of fabric, the subtle use
of contrast and colour and the sensitive portraiture that are characteristic
of Nincheri's best work.
