Stege's Store: Hub of Early Commerce

Hunting party

Hunting party leaving Stege's Store in Hudson's Hope in 1930. Henry Stege came to Hudson's Hope in 1924 and opened a business in the old Revillon Freres building. Entrepreneurs were truly a great part of the growth of the area. To provide work for other settlers so they could pay their bills and be able to purchase goods needed, in the fall of 1934 Mr. Stege proceeded to build a three-story structure to house his store, his dwelling and extra rooms. A bit later, as there was no plumbing in those days, a two-story outhouse was built a short distance behind the store- An overhead railed-in walk led the back doorway on the second floor of the hotel to the second story of the outhouse. One was always squeamish using this convenience no matter which story one was on, but would be considerable more worried if on the lower story, needlessly, of course!
