The Providence Hospital

The Providence Hospital
The Providence Hospital had its beginnings in early 1931. Before this, small outpost hospitals dotted the country. At the request of Father Beuglet of Fort St. John, the Sisters of Providence were sent to found the hospital. The Sisters arrived in mid-February and worked tirelessly at their project. The white pine two story framework building was 30 X 50 feet and had ten beds. It was officially opened on September 2, 1931 and the first operation was performed the next day. Many additions were made over the years to accommodate the growing population. It was 1973 when transfer of ownership was made and the Providence Hospital became Fort St. John General. The last two sisters left in April 1976.
