Delivering the Money

Cashing cheques on the road

National Defence photo - For many years, the practice of delivering payroll to those who worked and maintained the highways was an interesting one. On payday, the paymaster would drive around and give cheques to the men on the equipment. More often than not, the men would be housed in camps or in small communities with no banking facilities so would have no where to get cash for the next month so, a method was devised. A short while after the visit by the paymaster, the men would have another visit from a fellow with money! Paycheques would be endorsed and turned over in exchange for cash, usually right in the middle of whatever work the men were doing. This way, they were sure of having money to get them through to next payday!
