Alexander Mackenzie Monument

Alexander Mackenzie Monument

Alaska Highway News photo - In 1958, the citizens of Fort St. John were on hand for the unveiling of a monument to Alexander Mackenzie. In 1793, on his overland quest for the Pacific Ocean, Alexander Mackenzie noted in his journal about the area and remarked on how he thought it would be a good site for a post. The following year, on Mackenzie's note, the North West Company sent men out to establish a post. The sites of the actual posts may have moved over the years but that does not change our distinction of being the oldest white settlement on mainland British Columbia.
