Bringing Oil to the Surface
After a well has been drilled and oil discovered, often it has to be brought to the surface mechanically. One method of doing this is by using a pump jack attached to a submersible pump. The pump is placed into the well at the end of a string of solid pipe called a rod. The top end of the rods are clamped to the horsehead section of the pumpjack. The up and down movement of the horsehead, produced by either a gas or electric motor, activates the pump which, in turn, forces the oil to the surface.
