CARL SCHAEFER
(1903 - unknown)

Carl Schaefer was born in 1903 in Hanover, Ontario. His early inspirations came from magazines, books, and illustrations, and his interest in art grew quickly. He studied at the Ontario College of Art and he had the privilege of being taught by both Arthur Lismer and J.E.H. MacDonald.

Schaefer graduated from the College of Art in 1924, and for years, before joining the Group of Seven, he painted theater sets and decorations. He befriended MacDonald and worked on many commissioned murals alongside him. He became a part-time teacher, and the rest of the time, he went north to paint like many in the Group of Seven did.

Schaefer had his first one-man exhibit in 1936 at Douglas Duncan's Picture Load Society in Toronto.
