Prudence Heward was born in Montreal and lived in that area all her life. She became known after she won an arts competition in 1929. It was her entry into the serious art scene. All through
the thirties she sketched during the summers on the St. Lawrence river with her friend A.Y Jackson. But she was most famous as a sensitive portrait artist. Her 'Dark Girl' with its sympathetic harmonies is one of the most moving Canadian portraits. She
wasn't a very healthy person, and on a trip to L.A she died in 1947.
