As the first inhabitants of our land, the Native tribes were a natural subject for the Canadian artist. Artists looked to record the majestic yet threatened way of life of the proud tribes. A golden age in the painting of Natives dawned in Quebec, Montreal, and along the St. Lawrence river in the late 18th century.
