As settlement in Canada became more centralized, the artists moved their emphasis from rural to urban communities. Landscape-type urban works began to surface, and were commonplace in the late 1700's, particularly in Quebec. Some popular scenes were those incorporating an important community event. Periods of civil unrest and conflict served as interesting snapshots of the urban setting.
