By the end of Stage 2 a learner has a better understanding of place value, knows numbers up to 1,000 and understands basic fractions and decimals.

At this stage, a learner:

Place Value

  • counts forward by Is, 2s, 5s, 10s, 25s and 100s to 1,000
  • understands concept of place value to 2 digits (e.g. can explain that the digit "5" in the number 59 is worth "50" and in the number 75 it is worth "5")
  • using manipulatives such as Base Ten Blocks, is able to physically represent numbers 1 to 500, and vice versa
  • is able to read, write and show an understanding of numbers in written form (one, two ... ) from 1 to 100
  • orders and compares numbers (greater than, less than, equal to) 1 to 500
  • rounds off numbers
  • estimates greater quantities and amounts

Patterns and Groups

  • recognizes and creates more complex patterns
  • recognizes, creates and labels groups of items (sets)

Operations

  • can perform double digit addition and subtraction without regrouping (borrowing and carrying)
  • understands, can show with manipulatives, and explain to another student, the concepts of multiplication and division
  • understands, can show with manipulatives, can explain to another student, and can label and identify fractions and decimals

Temperature

  • matches temperature words such as "cold, warm, hot, freezing" to areas on thermometer

Money

  • counts coins and bills makes change from $5

Time and Calendar

  • tells and reads time to the minute
  • reads and writes months and days
  • orders months and days (eg. Mon, Tues, Wed..., Jan, Feb, March ...)
  • date in number format (5/18/96)

Measurement

  • is able to use a ruler and weighing scale
  • is able to use measuring utensils for cooking and baking

Calculator

  • can perform operations using a calculator

Metacognitive Strategies

  • uses memory
  • explains concept to another student
  • checks understanding of problem
  • refers to similar problems done in the past in
  • order to help solve a current problem
