General description

  • Learner's understanding of written text is expanding with her/his knowledge of the language itself (vocabulary, structure, etc.), in addition to the improving awareness of the sound-symbol relationship and spelling conventions in English due to exposure.
  • .Able to read a simple passage within a familiar, predictable context of daily personal life: simple narrative of routine events (e.g. stories written and read in class); simple descriptive prose about people, places and things; set of instructions.
  • May require re-reading and clarification.
  • Understands purpose and general idea of text in prose and other texts.
  • Able to phonetically decode and sound out all familiar and unfamiliar words.
  • Can read unsimplified authentic texts rarely and usually with great difficulty; very short news items with literal language and no idiom, weather forecast, sales promotion coupons and flyers.
  • Can find specific, more detailed information, mostly in formatted text with clear layout.
